She even changed her city of residence from Rome to Florence and got married- seems to me she was trying to escape the sexual women reputation and not to enhance it.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10709867170358663736noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6831009937904435715.post-572079555976668792013-02-04T10:42:47.540-05:002013-02-04T10:42:47.540-05:00This comment has been removed by the author.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10709867170358663736noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6831009937904435715.post-69507293106412776562013-01-25T13:09:59.689-05:002013-01-25T13:09:59.689-05:00Thanks everyone! The Allegory of painting was presented as a woman, along with a chain, a mask, a palette and brushes and easel. There are long detailed reasons for each of these "signifiers" that might not make a lot of sense to us nowadays. But, back in the 1600's the Iconologia was consulted by viewers of art as well as by artists who wished to employ complex iconography in their work, so they were all on the same page. probably "decoding" the messages in the paintings was part of the fun! ;-)
Nancy Bea Millerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04833697697334243593noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6831009937904435715.post-82391445275381881992013-01-24T22:16:44.740-05:002013-01-24T22:16:44.740-05:00A palette, brushes and a lowered mask seem to be s...A palette, brushes and a lowered mask seem to be some more clues - I would guess to a self-portrait.heddynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6831009937904435715.post-39245941634649902982013-01-24T19:40:44.412-05:002013-01-24T19:40:44.412-05:00I agree, doesn't seem to be pandering to the m...I agree, doesn't seem to be pandering to the male gaze.
Nancy Bea Millerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04833697697334243593noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6831009937904435715.post-52364594983640100492013-01-24T18:32:17.845-05:002013-01-24T18:32:17.845-05:00Cool!Cool!Terry Stricklandhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10405339807602922679noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6831009937904435715.post-16790162628609259042013-01-24T18:15:16.086-05:002013-01-24T18:15:16.086-05:00The pose is so atypical for the time--I mean, all ...The pose is so atypical for the time--I mean, all the interesting bits concealed? Come on. What man would have painted that? I think it would have taken a woman to see the female nude with fresh eyes (and old eyes at the same time, since she sees her own naked body everyday), and choose to highlight such an odd angle. And also, such a lazy pose on such an uncomfortable floor. I think a man would have put her in a comfortable bed. Only a female artist in the habit of stripping down to look at herself as a reference for her own paintings would have thought that a painting like this made any sense at all.Kate Stonehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16759073632384667608noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6831009937904435715.post-32541637012583836012013-01-24T17:29:58.949-05:002013-01-24T17:29:58.949-05:00Very nice.
